Two Meters of Canvas

Na, que le he hecho unos pantalones al niño.

Con el ultimo trozo de loneta que dejé sin teñir, por si surgía la ocasión.

Y como estos niños crecen tanto, pues surge.

Hello girls! I´ve  just finished two meters of canvas by making these shorts for Jaime, who, as you can gather from the photos, is crazy about Minecraft!

El modelo es de un Burda, no me preguntéis cual, porque con el lío de revistas que me traigo sería como encontrar el santo Grial, más o menos.

Pero vamos, pantalones sencillitos. Lo único que le he añadido yo ha sido el elástico de esos con ojales, con un par de botones en la cinturilla posterior. Y tampoco es que le quedase mucho por fruncir.

The pattern comes from one of many Burda magazines, but don't ask me which issue it is, as right now all my magazines are not exactly organized and I mixed my Burdas with my Patrones and telling you the exact issue/month/year would be as hard as finding a needle in a haystack.

But, I mean, the pattern is not really groundbreaking, I just added an elastic in the back of the waistband to adjust it better.

Pues lo teñí, allá por septiembre. De azul marino, porque quería hacer un petate igualito, igualito a ESTE/THIS ONE,

El mío salió más barato y encima está forrado de una tela chula.

And where did the other meter and a half of canvas went?
Well, I dyed it back in September. Navy blue. I wanted to make a ditty bag; an exact replica of ESTE/THIS ONE for a friend who went to sail the seven seas...or at least two or three.
Mine is clearly cheaper and it is lined with a very ad-hoc fabric.

Tuve que ir a un taller de toldos para pedir que me hicieran los agujeros con remaches de latón y los de la cincha que sujeta los cabos.

¿Veis los nudos en la parte de abajo de los cabos? Aprendí a hacerlos para que fueran exactamente iguales que los del petate.

Aprendí muchas cosas haciendolo, la verdad. Y recordé algo de geometría.

I went to a canopy workshop to make the brass rivets.

I'm specially proud of having taught myself to make those knots on the ropes. I had to practice a lot for them!

I actually learnt a lot of things while making this bag...a bit of geometry too!

La Chica Dorada. The Golden Girl.

¡Alguien tiene pantalones nuevos con mochila a juego!

Someone just got some new trousers with a backpack to match!

Remaches y botón de jeans, que ya tenía unas ganas de usarlos...

Pero no soy yo. Le han tocado a la guapa de la casa.

Estoy un poco harta de tener que tensar las gomas de todos los pantalones de las tiendas, y que al final le quedan horrorosos por detrás. A mi hija siempre le quedan muy grandes de cintura.

Así que me puse a hacer una muselina con una tela de decoración que me había dado mi suegra, para ver que talla le iba a la niña. Por medidas de cadera y cintura para el Burda es una 122.

And it wasn´t me! They are for the prettiest girl in the house.
I´m a little bit fed up of pulling the elastics of all the RTW trousers so that they can fit her. The result is always terrible as they look very baggy at the back waist. My daughter has a tiny waist compare to the lenght of her legs.
So I decided to make a muslin with a decoration fabric I had from my mother-in-law, to see what size was the best for Julia. But she liked the fabric so much that they turned from muslin to the real-deal.
I measured her hips and waist and she was a size 122 by Burda standards.

Usé el patrón 619 del Burda kids 02/2011. Alargando las perneras hasta el infinito y más allá.

Le gustó tanto lo de tener unos pantalones dorados, que de muselina pasó a ser "the real deal" Lo malo es que como la tela no estira nada de nada, no le da para agacharse muy bien. Pero no la importa nada. Está encantada con sus pantalones.

I used the Burda Kids 02/2011 pattern number 619. I had to lenghen the pattern to infinity and beyond.
With this fabic, that has no stretch at all, she cannot move very freely but she doesn´t mind at all. She is delighted with the colour and the shine!

Por fín uno pantalones que la sientan bien por detrás!
At last some pants that look good on her!

Como aún me sobraba tela, decidí probar suerte con una mochilita de BUTTERICK 4147 Que me ha dado más trabajo más que una chaqueta chanel!

As I still have some fabric left I tried my luck with this  BUTTERICK 4147 backpack. It made me work harder than a Channel jacket!

Pero otra vez ella encantada con el resultado. Se me ocurrió hacer un aplique con una de las flores de terciopelillo que lleva la parte de dentro de la tela.

She loves it! It occured to me to make an appliqué with the one of the flowers from the wrong of the fabric. I think it looks pretty good!

Tiene un bolsillo con cremallera delante y dos bolsillitos internos en el forro.

Metí la pata y terminé uniendo el forro a la mochila por el método planchar-juntar-zig-zag.

The bag has got a front zippered pocket and two pockets on the lining.
I glued the cardboard to the bottom before attaching the lining to the bag so I couldn´t do it as per the Butterick instructions.

Yes, I´ve been strugling to attach the velcro to the extension!
Si, poner el velcro me ha costado. Se rompía el hilo cada tres puntadas!

El bolsillo exterior. Para guardar las llaves de casa. 

Así ha ido ella de chula esta mañana al cole. ¡Bueno espero que me preste la mochila algun dia!

And off she went to school. She might allow me to wear her backpack one day!

Los pantalones por fuera y por dentro.

Y os dejo con una comparativa de la cintura del pantalón nuevo con uno de los que lleva normalmente, creo que de Zara.

And here is a comparative of the RTW trousers (Zara, I think) and the ones I made.

Habrá que repetir, pero esta vez con una tela un poco más elástica. Os recomiendo este patrón si teneis el mismo problema que yo con las cinturillas de tienda!

I´ll have to make them again but using a more stretchy fabric. I recommend this pattern if you have the same problems with the RTW trousers.

Por fín he cosido algo para mi marido, y ya de paso al otro hombrecito de la casa. Van conjuntadísimos!

At last I sewed something for the hubby and along with it, another piece for Jaime.

La tela que he utilizado me la regaló mi madre, la compró en Mejico, pensando en el piratilla de su nieto, pero ha dado para los dos

The fabric I used was bought by my mom in Mexico thinking about her little pirate (That would be the kid :)
but it was enough for both of them

Para el papá, use este modelo de Burda, pero añadiendo trabillas para cinturón. Mi  marido es fan del look Julián Muñoz, aunque esté pasado de moda, y necesita subirse el pantalón a los sobaquillos.

For the dad I used this Burda pattern, adding belt loops. He should have lived in another era where the trousers were worn above the navel :)

Y para el niño el mismo modelo que usé para su pantalón Mamma Mia!, pero con bolsillos a los lados y uno posterior con solapa.

And for the son I used the same pattern as I did for his Mamma Mia! trousers, adding the side pockets and back pocket with the flap.

Vista trasera del papá. Es bastante dificil para la ropa en general. Tiene que ser cómodo para poder moverse con total libertad.

Back view of the Dad. He is very peculiar about the fitting, and about clothes in general. They have to allow him to move freely.

Niños de Fiesta. Children Party Outfits

¡Hola! ¿Que tal estamos llevando las vacaciones? Yo he ido con los niños a casa de mis padres en el Cabo de Gata, y como allí no tenía internet ni muchas distracciones me he dedicado a terminar los vestidos de los niños para las comuniones, y otras cositas que os iré enseñando.

Hello! How is the Easter Holiday going?
I went with the children to my parent´s home in Cabo de Gata, Almería, south east of Spain. I had no internet over there and not too many distractions so I finished the children´s party outfits and some other things I´ll show you soon.

El vestido de la niña no tiene mucho misterio. Un cuerpo sencillito arriba y una falda fruncida. El cuerpo va forrado y la falda lleva ¿enagua? a la que he añadido una tira gruesa y doble de la camisa del niño el la parte de abajo y de la que asoman unos tres dedos de la falda superior. Con un trozo de la tela de flores que destaca en el vestido le he hecho un lazo para la cintura. Traté de rematarlo con una puntada "rodada" con un prensatelas especial, pero al final la cinta ha quedado por algunos sitios dada de sí y un poco irregular. Nada que no se disimule con un buen doblado. Le tengo que añadir unas trabillas, eso sí.

The girl´s dress is quite simple. The bodice is lined and the gathered skirt too. At the bottom of the skirt lining I added a folded strip of the boy´s shirt fabric so it shows under the main skirt.
I also bought the flowery fabric and made a sash. I tried to finish it with a special presser- foot but the result is less than perfect.

El misterio:¿ Como es que despues de probarle el cuerpo 500 veces y ver que le iba a ir justito, justito, cuando lo tengo todo cosido se lo pongo y le sobran dos dedos de cada lado? El increible caso del vestido creciente.
There is a mistery to this dress: While trying it on the girl over and over it showed it was going to be quite tight on her, but when I finished (hand sewing and all) I had to take it in like three cm. from each side!

¿Por que nos ha puesto guapos y nos deja que juguemos en la arena? Aquí hay gato encerrado...
There is something fishy here: first she dress us up then she let us play in the sand...weird!

Lo del niño es una de las 200.000 camisas de niño que hay en el Burda o este caso Patrones. Lo dejé en cuello mao por gallina, que no me atreví con los picos.
The boy´s shirt is one of the 2000 boy´s shirts you can find in any Burda Mag or Patrones as in this case.
El pantalón es la version piqué del pantalón de cuero para niños del glorioso numero Burda Septiembre 2010. Según las medidas le hice la talla 98, fijandome en la de la cadera, pero le ha quedado un poco estrecho. Le puse el fondo de bolsillo de la tela de la camisa. Como mi hijo va con los pantalones caidos casi siempre, y su madre estaba un poco vaga, le puse elastico en la cinturilla y andando.
The pants are a piqué version of  boy´s leather pants in September 2010 Burda. I used some of the shirt fabric to line the pockets and  as my boy is always lifting his pants and her mum was a bit in the lazy side that day, I made an elastic band waist.

Ahora habia que hacer algo para tapar esa cinturilla. Se  me ocurrió un fajín con una linea de tela del vestido de la hermana en el que no apareciera nada rojo, y  la parte de dentro de la tela de su camisa. Cuatro tiras atras para atar por detras (se ve mejor en la última foto). Es algo raro, pero no me disgusta. La cara que tiene el niño en las fotos es por que no le gustan las chumberas, nada que ver con el fajín!

Now, trying to cover that waist I made a boy´s sash. I used fabric from the girl´s dress, and the inside is the same as his shirt. I add 4 strips to tie at the back. So it´s a bit weird but I like it. My son´s face in the pictures are showing dislike for the enviroment, NOT for his outfit!!! ;-)

Ahora solo queda comprarles unas chaquetitas rojas y zapatos a juego. Ah! y unos lacitos para el pelo.

Now I just have to get them some red jackets and red shoes... and something nice for the girl´s hair!

Mira, un poco más y me sirve de paracaidas!
Slightly smaller than a parachute

La sesión de fotos fué muy divertida. Les puse el chandal encima de la ropa, y fuimos de excursión por una ruta en el cabo. Mi intencion era hacerles las fotos en un molino pero había un ventarrón que se me volaban los churumbeles, y salian en las fotos con unas caras! Así que seguimos caminando hasta la playa y luego volvimos por otro camino ¡llegaron rendidos a casa!

The foto shoot was very entertaining. I made them wear their tracksuits over the clothes as it wasn´t warm enough, and march them to an old mill... too windy  to take pics there. Some more marching to the beach then back to the village, they were so exhausted when we came back home they eat like wolfes!

Mamá, por favor, compranos unos zapatos de fiesta!

Cosiendo con Espejito, Espejito.

Me encantan los modelitos para niñas de la revista Espejito Espejito. Me gustan mucho más que los del Burda y los de Patrones, con diferencia. Con los de los niños ya no comulgo tanto, pero solo por gusto personal: no veo a mi niño con cuellitos redondos, con vivos y eso. No es su estilo.
Solo hay una cosa que me echa para atrás a la hora de ponerme a coser con Espejito: El tallaje.
Vamos a ver, mi hija, con casi siete años tiene una altura normal y una coplexión normal, incluso atlética, pero no es super delgada. En el Burda Kids y en Patrones es una talla 116 y una 6 respectivamente. En Espejito es una 2.

Here in Spain there is a magazine called Espejito Espejito (Mirror Mirror...) The girl´s dresses are my favourites. I like them better than Burda Kids´ and Patrones niños by far... There is one thing that keeps me away from sewing their patterns: The sizing. My daughter who is almost seven years old is a size 116 by Burda or a 6 by Patrones. By Espejito she is a size two.

No problemo! le hago la talla 2 y solo tengo que añadir centímetros al largo. Pues no. No funciona así. Por que las sisas tambien se te quedan enanas.
So I thought I´d make a size 2 and just add lenght. But it doesn´t work that way. The armholes are still too small.

Otra cosa importante. Si eres novata y necesitas unas explicaciones inteligibles, esta no es tu revista. En media página les cabe las explicaciones y el material de cinco modelos diferentes. Hay que saber coser. O en su defecto tener una madre al lado que te saque del atolladero. La parte del cuello en el patrón te la dan como una tira recta de tela, ni siquiera al bies, que sería más manejable.Al intentar ponerlo, no hay manera... a cortar otra.

You cannot sew following the magazine instructions if you are a beginner sewist. You need experience or at least, as was my case, a person who has it, my mum. The neck piece was terribly drafted and had to cut it again.

Después de muchos malos ratos, al final salió bastante bien y la verdad es que es de los vestidos más bonitos que tiene, ese tipo de linea le queda muy bien, pero solo pensar en enfrentarme con otro de estos patrones me pone los pelos de punta.

It was painful to finish this one but I admit it came out quite right, and she looks great in it, but just the thought of starting another of these proyects is too much for me.

A el niño le hice en lino una versión libre del 621, un caftán del Burda Extra kids 2010, y el pantalón algo que se parece al 602 de esa misma revista, pero sin bolsillos y con un elástico.

For the boy I used a free version of number 621 Burda Extra Kids 2010, and the trousers something like number 602 omitting the pockets and using elastic for the waistband. At that point I couldn´t be bothered by zippers and buttons.

Sirve para ser pirata...



...como para ser vaquero.
