Vestido "Barra del bar" Terminado. Bar Counter Dress, check.

Vogue 8574

¡Ah!
Ah! They joys of sewing something with clear instructions. I didn´t make any alterations, although it needs some in the back.  But who will notice with this dazzling print?

To cut such a slippery fabric I used this method from "A Fashionable Stitch". Very helpful. Thank you.

The only difficulty I found was joining the top to the neck band.

Dibujo tecnico del modelito

He aquí lo que ha salido. Me he enterado de lo del disparo automático en la cámara y le he dado el día a Roberta. Que le duele la cabeza (ji,ji)

So here is the outcome. I found out about the delayed action release in my camera, and I gave Roberta the day off. She´s got a headache, poor thing (ha,ha)

¡Y lo mejor es que tiene bolsillos! ¿Quien no necesita bolsillos en una fiesta? ¿Qué haces con las manos?
The best feature: it has pockets! Who doesn´t need pockets at a party? What do you do with your hands?

Dia 4 del retiro . 4th day of my private sewing boot-camp.

FASE 1 - ABRIGO
PHASE 1 - COAT

I thought I was going to be quicker with this sewing challenge that I imposed to myself, but we are talking Patrones Magazine, here. No easy task. From the begining it looked bad, and it went worse when the coat neck edge was up to my hair, other parts were too short, no neck facing to speak of...

I got so tired of the whole thing I  tried on Roberta and just made a new neckline. I had also my sewing-ripping fit with the lining but only due to my lack of carefulness.

It will take some time until I even consider to tackle one of these again.
vista de frente. Front view
Vista por detras. Back view
Y el forro, mi vista favorita. The lining, my favourite view
Bueno, pues con vaqueros quedará bastante bien.
I think it will look good with jeans.

FASE 2 - TUNICA
FASE 2 - TUNIC
As I was feeling a bit down with the above proyect and as women can multitask easily, to cheer myself up I made something easy: Vogue 1261
From the three versions I chose the one top right. It´s very easy, looks good and has got something particular in the construction, some of the seam allowances are on the outside.

Roberta was helping me so much these past days, and as I have nobody to take my pictures it´s only fair for her to be my model.
Now for the bar counter dress, wish me luck!

Trogloditas a go-go. Lots and lots of troglodytes

I was reading  la inglesita´s blog in the link above and her wonderful costumes made in just a week time, and I remembered I didn´t show you mine.
It´s nothing to write home about, and not glamourous at all. At school they dress according to what they are working on at the moment. This year was dark ages. I could have make a bit effort and go for a dinosaur, but I´m lazy when it comes to costumes so I made a very complicated (ahem) pattern.

I cut the fabric with the neck on the fold so I didn´t have to sew the shoulders, made a hole for the head, added the plush fabric and got crazy with the scissors to make irregular hems. Some rectangles for the arms and legs and a lot of stripes to tie them up. I also made two stuffed felt bones, and ready!

A sewing week ahead of me.

Bueno, igual tambien leo algo.

Tomorrow is the first day of my children and husband´s holiday. They´ll be away, enjoying the cold weather as the unluky one (me) who has to work, stays home. As a way to cope with this sad situation I´m planning to sew...What else!

Let´s see: I´ve got this synthetic suede, and the other fabric I´ll be using for lining:

I bought the suede to make Vogue 1268, but some people from blogland have try it and you have to alter the pattern, make a muslin, and I´m not ready for that yet.

So I remembered Patrones 295, 24. Synthetic suede coat. I´m only tracing the fabric and already in a fit as the instructions say that you have to cut some parts of the pattern and put them together to "create" the neck  facing, and they don´t fit together!

I don´t want the Spring to find me with nothing new to wear, so I´ll be making Vogue 8574, the long version. It´s a very easy vogue: day and a half tops.

This is the fabric I´m going to use. I call it the "bar counter" fabric. Doesn´t those looks as glass marks on a counter? It has a lovely drape.
If I still have time I´ll make some more:
Vogue 8772
I haven´t got too much fabric. I´ll try the sleeveless version plus the big collar.
Hier ist the fabric.
I should be looking for fabrics and patterns for my children party dresses but I don´t feel very inspired for that yet.

I´ll be telling you about it.

Patrones 296 14 Top 15 pitillo

Patrones Magazine: A love-hate relationship. I´d love to sew all the garments from one issue and none of them from another. There are some original patterns but I don´t dare to sew them as the instructions are something in the lines of: "Cut the fabric pieces, join them at the marks , sew the zipper and finish the hem" Not what I need.
Another thing: The names they give: La Redoute wide legged trousers or Venca top. Well, I´d rather sew something more glamorous.

Then the patterns themselves. I have the feeling they don´t try them at all. They have this tendency to design very narrow sleeves and legs.

From number 296, Fall-Winter special, I liked a lot of things, but this is the first one I made.

Trousers constructions is quite peculiar, closing the leg at the same time you sew the pockets. Those were really big and floppy so I added a pleat and a button.

The legs were narrow, so I had to use the seam allowances to the max.

The top has an error in the neck pattern. It goes too high in the back and doesn´t sit nicely there. It goes worse when you add the zipper.
This is the result, trying to emulate the model, without the great hair

Grrr!
Another mistake, only mine. Make the belt strips the same width as the belt you want to use. Grr!

Here in Spain there is a magazine called Espejito Espejito (Mirror Mirror...) The girl´s dresses are my favourites. I like them better than Burda Kids´ and Patrones niños by far... There is one thing that keeps me away from sewing their patterns: The sizing. My daughter who is almost seven years old is a size 116 by Burda or a 6 by Patrones. By Espejito she is a size two.

So I thought I´d make a size 2 and just add lenght. But it doesn´t work that way. The armholes are still too small.

Esto es lo que intentaba hacer:
Modelo 27 de la revista n. 11.

Otra cosa importante.

You cannot sew following the magazine instructions if you are a beginner sewist. You need experience or at least, as was my case, a person who has it, my mum. The neck piece was terribly drafted and had to cut it again.

It was painful to finish this one but I admit it came out quite right, and she looks great in it, but just the thought of starting another of these proyects is too much for me.

For the boy I used a free version of number 621 Burda Extra Kids 2010, and the trousers something like number 602 omitting the pockets and using elastic for the waistband. At that point I couldn´t be bothered by zippers and buttons.
Sirve para ser pirata...

...como para ser vaquero.
Y es muy "cool"
Hasta pronto
See you soon

Burda 101 02/2011 Vestido Dress

Since I strarted buying Burda Style Magazine, I noticed the best ones are the ones in February and September. This one is from the February issue 2011.
I used some patterns from that month but the best one by far was 101. I used this dress during spring and summer and it proved to be very versatile, as you can dress it up or down for any ocasion.

It is a very popular pattern among the members of BurdaStyle as you can see if you go to this link

I lined it completely including the skirt to give it fullness. The fabric I used is a cotton satin with some elasticity to it.
I found the belt at a Zara shop and I virtually lept on it.

I also found a matching nail polish!

Este os le recomiendo.

Carnaval, Carnaval. Charleston dress

This is a kind of tutorial. Sorry about the photos, they are terrible, I´m trying to improve in that department, but it takes time.
This dress is for one of my colleagues´s daughter. I quite dislike sewing costumes, frequently you just have to wing it, with no pattern, no instructions... That´s precisely why I write this tutorial, maybe there is somebody who needs a costume for Carnival and have as little a clue as I had before doing this.

Materiales:
75 cm de tejido con lentejuelas
75 cm forro
3 metros de fleco
1.5 metros de cinta decorativa brillante
Cremallera

 You´ll need:
30 inches long of sequined fabric
30 inches long of lining fabric
3.3 yards of fringe
1.6 yards of decorative ribbon
Zipper

Problem: The sequined fabric cannot hold the weight of the finge, it stretches and moves around so much. Mi solution is to use a lining fabric underneath and work as if it was one, and also use as little seams as possible

I drew a pattern with half the measures of the girl (Chest, waist and hips) added the usual seam allowance plus 2 inches in the lower part. I also measure the girl from the armpits to where I wanted the dess to end, at the knee.
I cut both fabrics in the same manner on the fold

With right sides together I sewed  both lining and sequined fabic.
I understitched the seam allowances to the lining so it didn´t move.
encarando derechos
right sides together

We´ve got both fabrics together. Now for the fringe. First thing I did was basting where the fringes will lay later so the fabrics won´t budge when I sew through all the thickness

You cannot see the thread very well, sorry. My lead pieces, very necessary so nothing moves while basting.

Yo hice tres filas. Lo de uno por uno es para que no se te lien y cosas los de arriba con los de abajo.
Very carefully place the fringes on the right side of the sequined fabric, one by one starting with the one on top. Baste them before sewing so they don´t move.

On the top row, sew on the decorative ribbon. Try on the girl to see where you have to place  the shoulder straps and mark them with pins.

Cut two strips of both fabrics. One 23 inches long and 0.8 wide for the straps and the other 20.4 inches long and 2.4 wide for the hair band. With right sides together, baste and sew. In the widest one don´t close the ends, in the thinner, close one end to make it easier to turn the strap.

Use a long instrument to turn the thinner strip.

Sew the decorative ribbon on the thinner strip
Close the dress sewing the zipper, you can use this method
Then close the dress to the bottom and finish the bottom part turning both fabrics and sewing them. Sew the shoulder straps in place
We add a little elastic band to the open edges of the head band turning in the edges a bit.

And ready!. You can now add a feather to the headband, a feather boa, long pearl necklaces...

Cosas de niños - Sewing for the little ones

Starting with the easy one. I had this small piece of fabric, not enough for a dress, and a very nice lace ending from my mother. I don´t remember from which Burda did the pattern come from, it has got pockets and buttons in the back, so it just needed a little white lining and voilá!

It came out all right, despite my bad gathering technique. So I made a vest to match from Burda Kids 2010, from leftover fabric that I had from my sofa cover. An appliqué from the skirt with my dear Therm o web and ready.

I made two school bags for them using ideas from the links above.

My boy´s teacher liked them so much I made yet another bag for her using a tutorial in the link above

And before Christmas I sewed this hats for them.
McCall´s 6448

My son´s been swallowed by a monster!
See you soon
