Patrones Infantiles. New (to me) Kids Patterns

Hola a todas. Aqui estoy.

Hello! Anyone missing my weekly make? Well, can´t show it to you just yet. You see, I´ve been sewing like mad, but it was all for TELARIA´S MARATHON (or is it "sewathon"?) Anyways, until the time comes when I can show it to you, this will have to make do. Here is a review of a couple of things that arrived home in the past weeks .

Primero PETITES FILLES A CROQUER.

Firstly  PETITES FILLES A CROQUER. I ordered this book from Telaria, Miren recommended it to me and I was a bit reluctant at first because it is in French, but she said you don´t need to speak the language to understand the instructions and she is right. Besides it is a lot of fun. Sewing and learning French words as you go. A win-win. I like this book so much. Reasons:
1. The garments. They are beautiful. Full stop.
2. The instructions. Clear and with good diagrams.
3. The sizes are quite close to my daughter´s (at last!)
4. There is a couple of patterns (Tunic and coat) for the moms (hi,hi)

These here are my faves. Look at that ruffled skirt. It is not such. They are actually shorts! Ideal for my daughter who is still into cart-wheeling but getting a bit self-aware and not wanting to show her knickers as she goes. And that short coat? How cute is that? I like the little tunic with shorts and my daughter loves the hooded coat.

Another skirt that is not. Just love that! A lovely tunic with "pantacourts" (hi,hi, I´m learning!) And a couple of really nice dresses for the summer, don´t you think?

I´m not mad about these down here, but some are growing on me.

OS LO RECOMIENDO

I DO RECOMMEND THIS BOOK (or a similar one)

Another thing. Charo of COSIENDO Y APRENDIENDO sent me this magazine. It is YOUNG IMAGE AUTUMN/WINTER 2011/2012. You can see browse more issues by clicking the link. Now, it seems that this magazine is not going to release new issues. The last one was the one for the Summer 2013. I gather the designs are quite nice, up-to-date kids patterns.

What I like:
Sizes. There are dresses, jackets, etc, ranging from size 128 to 176. That´s a lot better than Burda in my opinion.
Modern designs, although in some of the photos I guess they didn´t choose the right fabrics, but who am I to complain!

I think my boy will get some trousers and there is something here for the girl too.
What do you think? Have you ever try this patterns, the japanese or these Young Image ones that I believe are Dutch?

Trick and Luck. Truco y Suerte.

¡Hola!

Hi! Here again. Just to tell you my trick to sew the snaps in their right place. It´s a no-brainer, really, but bear in mind I´m a self-taught seamtress and what seems obvious for some of you, for me it is like a ground-breaking discovery. Actually I´m quite square, I used to dutifully  mark the placements of the buttons, snaps etc, before starting to sew. Then, you know what happens: any uneveness results on a shift of things and then the little snaps won´t match.
So what I do now is this. First I sew the studded part  to the garment as evenly as I can and following the instructions and then I do this:

Facil, ¿eh?
¿Alguna sugerencia? ¿Pofiiii?

Easy, huh? now I´ve got a question for you: You know there are some snaps that are harder than others to open and close. Those are the ones that "un-sew" themselves no matter how securely you have attach them.
I sew them like this:
Six or seven stitches around each little hole, then I cotinue to the next until I finish. Then I go crazy stitching and knottting and stitching again, until I think they will be safe, then I hide the thread and cut.

But still the tough ones always unsew themselves at some point. Any suggestions?

And now let me tell you about this wonderful thing that happened to me. I´m telling you sometimes I look at my husband askance... you know how the saying goes:" Lucky at gambling, unlucky in love" because, yet again I won a give away!!! Can you believe it? Well, here it is: A lot of buttons, and other assorted notions that are a treasure. My kids just wanted to take the whole loot and run away with it (necklaces, wristbands...an actual hole in the ground and then mark it with an X, so went the whispers) and I had to hide it. It came all the way from Barcelona. The lovely Alicia from UNA MODISTILLA DE PACOTILLA sent it to me and I´m so very, very grateful!

¡Ja!
¡Besos a todas! Y sed buenas. Aunque si sois malas, lo pasareis mejor ;)

Lots of love and good vibes to all of you. See you soon!

Vogue 8854. Another Casual Thing. Más Casual

¡Hola!

Hello! Here I come again with my casual fashion, to take the kids to school, to walk the doggie, to go to Tarifa in the middle of a hurricane, to go to the market...I got this fabric, the blue knit, from the market in Santander, where I spend the summer; they don´t have as much as we do here in Algeciras to choose from, but they have very good basics: canvas, denim, knits, and in solids. I still enough left to make a hoodie for my boy. The flowery fabric is a cotton that was at home, a little strip of it, from when I used to keep all my scraps.

The pattern I used is this one here. It has three versions: The hooded and asymetrical hem one, the one I made and the vest option. I would have love to make the hooded version, but then I wouldn´t have enough for the boy´s hoodie. Oh, motherhood! It´s all about sacrifices! ;)
V8854

There are a lot of great versions at Pattern Review.

I can´t complain, though. This kind of neck can be worn in different ways: Apart from buttoned up you can wear it half unbottoned , buttoned up but folded, totally unbottoned and you can even let the strong wind to be you stylist!

These are the details of the tunic, as Vogue calls it. The part I found more difficult was hemming that rounded thing

As knits and me don´t get along very nicely, and also being this a really thick one, I couldn´t make the narrow hem the instructions asked. I tried but the hem got wobbly and ugly. So I thought of using some bias tape for the hem and sleeves. This way it doesn´t get too bulky and it kind of stabilize the fabric. Very simple. Here is how I made it.

Did you like my silly tutorial? Next instalment: my trick to sew the snaps. High couture sewing techniques! ;)
See you very soon!

Flat Felled Seam. Costura Vaquera

¡Hola!

Hello! I´ve been asked how I finished the seams in the last jacket I made, and I guess that although there are a lot of great tutorials on how to make this flat fell seams like for example:
This one: Coletterie. On a straight seam
This one: Hand made by Carolyn. On a curved seam
This one: Also from Carolyn. Fla felled and a split.
Sometimes I have to make my small, tiny contribution, and probably, it´s not even right, but this is how I did it.

Easy, huh? Well, it´s not perfect but if it helps somebody, I´ll be glad.
Happy week everyone!

The Hoodie. La ¿Sudadera?

¡Hola amiguitas!

Hello friends!
I don´t know how is it with you all over the word, but over here The Mums have been very busy getting everything ready to go back to school (the kids, not the mums ;)
I had to steal some hours here and there to continue with my "Casual sewing" plan. So after the Cargo Pants, next on my list was "The hoodie". This is not the usual hoodie, mind. It is made of a kind of linen that looks like denim (linim?) and a piece of fabric left from THIS dress. I like it so much it had to feature somewhere, somehow. It is from TELARIA.

The pattern is from BurdaStyle Easy fall/winter 2010.

BurdaStyle Easy Fashion. H/W 2010

Las ateraciones al patrón fueron:

The pattern alterations were:
1. Lengthening the hem to "mid-bum"
2. Make the sleeves longer
3. Lowering the position of the pockets
4. Adding pretty details, as many as the flowery fabric allowed

Y este es el resultado.

Here is the result:

We had the greatest photo-shoot,playing "palas" with my dear friend and  with the collaboration of an expceptional ball-boy.

Vale, vale, volvemos a la costura: Detalles.
Costuras tejanas.

Alright, back to the sewing: Details
Flat-felled-seams almost all over. Next post I´ll show you how I did it. I know there are plenty tutorial about it , but I´ve been asked, so...

And my favourite feature: a four-piece, two-darts hood. It´s...erm...roomy!

You know what? I love taking this unisex things and making them girly and make nice finishings.
See you soon!

Maratón Telaria y Panic Sewing

Hola a todas!
Pasad e informaos AQUI

Hello! I´m back...so soon?  I just had to announce this event that is going to be the biggest one in the Spanish Sewing blogosphere so far. It is organized by Telaria  and you can read  about it HERE.

The event will start on October the 14th and finish on the 8th of November (My son´s birthday!) We will be sewing for our kids with a different theme each week, while we learn from others, and have fun.

Vale ahora Costuras provocadas por el pánico. Estuches.

Right!
Panic sewing.  I´ve read the list of things my kids need for next course that starts next Tuesday, and I feel the need to help the family economy by sewing at least the pencil cases. I used Naii´s tutorial , that you can find HERE. It´s very visual so even though it is in Spanish, it is very easy to understand.
It is a very fast thing. I used an hour to cut and sew all three of them and the toilet bag. I give it to you, I didn´t use the most appropriate fabric for kids, but I had a bit of fabric left from THIS COAT, and some zippers in my notions tin so there was no way I was going out to buy more. The kids are happy, I´m happy!

The girl also needed a toilet bag to use after the "Physical Education"class and I used this totorial from Rojo Ababol. Another easy, fast, useful proyect!

And now that School is starting again, I might see you more often. At least I hope so! Bye for now.

Cargo Pants

Hello! Nice to see you again!. After spending a great part of the summer trying to wear all my pretty dresses I realized that everything has it´s downfall: In my case, I can´t speak for anyone else, wearing a dress means also wear a little make up, the appropriate shoes, and, here goes my big challenge, perfect hair. And my hair is tricky, and unruly.
So, I had a good look at my closet and beside the shorts there are a few "casual" items. CASUAL is going to be my motto for the next season, I guess. After all, with my family I always end up on a beach or in a wood.
First thing I went for are cargo pants. Classic. Drop waisted, cream coloured and canvas fabric.

The pattern came from the same Patrones magazine as THESE SHORTS and, yep, it is the same girl again. I like her jacket very much too, but I bought the fabric at a flea market and although I returned, I never saw it again...

THE BEST PART: the pockets. I used cream coloured ribbon to make the sides of the pockets, and it gives the pants a little girliness. I made kind of big bound button-holes in all four pockets, and inserted a zipper in the upper ones. I also embroidered something different in each of them, all very subtle...

In the one on the bottom it is the beggining of an Spanish saying that goes "the current takes the prawn that falls asleep" I think it will translate as "You snooze, you loose"

Oh, and I used flat felled seams on the insides as it was very easy to make with this kind of fabric.

THE WORST PART: Because the pocket slits are placed on the hips it is very difficult to introduce the hads without hurting yourself with the metal zipper. Also I forgot completely about my lack of rear volume, to put it mildly, so they are not very flattering in that area, here is proof

WHAT I MISSED THIS TIME: Yes, it seems that I don´t like totally finished things for some reason. I this case I bought some more ribbon, only thinner to make the belt, but never did. Once the hem was done, I put them on and that was the end of it.

In case you are wondering this place is called Ubiarco, in Cantabria, Spain. There is a wonderful spot there, like a natural swimming-pool, surrounded by rocks. My husband took the kids to snorkle there, and they were so very happy watching the little fish.

Pues esto es todo, amigas. Corto y cambio.

So that´s all from me. Over and out!
