Pichi de Peque. A Simple Dress

¡Hola otra vez!

Hello again!
I wanted to show you this really simple dress I made for my daughter Julia a while ago, she can wear it now that the temperatures dropped.
It is special to me because I drew the pattern according to her measures. Does that count for pattern making? Also I think this is the first time I use a natural fabric,( I could swear I smelled wet sheep when I ironed this thing) and also the colours are the same as the unofficial uniform at my daughter´s school.

Vestido Julia 4
She´s got braces in the lower teeth, the poor dear.

A zipper in the back, two patch pocket to fill with rocks...

Vestido Julia 3
And she earned the watch because she learnt  how to tell the time really quickly

¡Y andando!

And ready!
I added facings and lining, too. Please excuse the wrinkles, she´s been wearing it all morning.
Vestido Julia 1 y 2

Cambio y corto.

In other news I carry on struggling my way through the lingerie word, and it´s giving me a lot of hard times but I guess I´ll get something half decent in the end.
Lots of love
Over and out!

Aguja Doble: Esa Gran Desconocida. Double Needle

A while ago my friend Ana from   ¿Que puedo hacer con esto? asked me about twin or double needle. I don´t use it much, just when I want to hem knits. I find that it doesn´t stretch the fabric as much as the zig-zag stitch, for example. The seam you´ll get with the double needle is also elastic. You can also make some decorative stitches with it , but never tried them myself.

Types of twin needles:
The diference is  in the gap between the needles. The head you attach to your sewing machine is the same as a regular needle
Si. La hay triple.¡Que cosas, oye!
Yep! Triple too!

To work with this needle you need to have two bobbins up there (and one down too :oD )
You should take both threads together and work as if you were using just one up to the point when you have to thread the needles

el dibujo habla por si mismo
The diagram speak for itself

Here is where each of them take different roads. Try to keep them untangled from now on, when you make your seams and cut the threads

Don´t forget to press the Double needle button! In my machine it is the one between MODE and EDIT.
There are some stitches you cannot make with it, like zig-zags and the likes. There are also some presser-feet you cannot use.

Aguja doble 2

Here is the result: on the right side two parallel seams and on the back a kind of small zig-zag.

I´m not a needle expert of any kind, but maybe any of the obviousness stated here are not too duh for you and I can save some little twins lives (They are expensive!)

Two Shades of Grey

Yep! only two shades, 50 would be too crowded for my new trousers ; D
Grey trousers are not boring! I can tell, I had the time of my life with the seam-ripper! I just found out this kind of trousers are called Jodhpurs. I´m a bit wiser today.

I found this fabric that was just gorgeous (except for the grey-ness of it), two different shades, two different textures in the right and wrong side of it.  And my mind travelled back to this old issue of Patrones Magazine, (the perfect nose got it right!) But I didn´t want the shiny part to be the main fabric as I want to wear these for everyday life.

You can appreciate the pattern pieces better in the drawing

PATTERN REVIEW

Pattern Description:
Jodhpur pants from Patrones Magazine nº 297 #21

Pattern Sizing:
40-44-48. In this magazine you have to draw the intermediate sizes, so if you are unlucky and you are a size 42 bring out the ruler! Also the sizing is smaller than Burda. I used a 42 for these pants whereas with Burda I use a 38

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, only I used the fabrics the other way round. The shiny part for the contrast

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Are you serious? Patrones doesn´t even tell you what pieces you have to interface, you are lucky to get diagrams on how to place the pattern on your fabric! Now, really, the instructions are scarce

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the jodhpur style without the bagginess I have seen in other patterns. Loved all the unusually shaped pieces of the pattern as well.
What I did not like is that the top part, hips and waist area was massively big, I had to take in various inches, but the leg part was really skinny, so much so that I had to take out some seam lines

Fabric Used:
A swede-like fabric that is shiny and nice on the wrong side

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The pattern asked to add a cord inside the waistband, but I found that so unnecessary, besides it has the belt loops.
Another big issue were the mock pockets on the back. I wanted them to enhance the bottom area, but if you place them as per the pattern they land below the bottom curve so it looks terrible! I placed them 5 cm. higher
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I will problably make this again. And I recommend them if you like the jodhpur look

Conclusion:
I had fun making these. The only issue I have with them is that. being skinny I cannot finish the seams with bias binding, and I do not own a serger yet, so the inside does not look very neat.

Y EN ESPAÑOL
Descripción del patrón:
Pantalones Jodhpur de Patrones numero 297, modelo 21

Tallas:

Me chifla.

See you soon!

Hola, ¿has visto mis pantalones nuevos?
Trying new poses, you know.

Plans and Proyects for 2013

Feliz Año a tutti quanti!
No mucho.Pensar.
Quiero hacer cosas nuevas y usar mis patrones antiguos.

Happy New Year to all of you!
Finally the suitcases are empty, and I have time to tell you what I´ve been up too, lately. Not much really.
I had an "epiphany" while sewing the Black Coat, and I´ve been thinking a lot about what I want from the sewing activity this year.
I realized I´m not happy when I work in my "comfort zone". So this year I won´t be buying any Burdas, or any other patterns. They stress me no end: So many pretty things!
I want to try new things and use the patterns and fabrics I already have.

Cosas nuevas como:
New things like:

PUNTO

KNITTING
I have 6 big wool balls like this, and I´m learning the basic stitches.

ROPA INTIMA

UNDERWEAR
I´ve been trying to work this out, using the most hideous t-shirts my husband treasures in his cupboard. It´s a win-win situation. Learning how to make panties and getting rid of the hideousness.
In a couple of t-shirts I´ll be able to use the "good stuff"
Also I´ll try the bra making. Right now there is a Bra sewalong at Cloth-Habit

 PATRONES RAROS

UNUSUAL PATTERNS
And attention to detail.
This is the pattern of the trousers I´m about to make...Ay,ay,ay!

HACER MIS PROPIOS PATRONES

MAKE MY OWN PATTERNS
I´ve been following Rosy´s tutorials over at Sewingadicta, on how to take measures, and how to draft a basic pattern.
I think I will be needing that if I want to work with this!

This (and another pattern magic that still hasn´t make its appearance) is my belated Christmas present.
I got it in my mail today and I´ve been carrying it around, to peek through the pages from time to time. It makes me happy just to touch it!

So that´s all for now, Folks!
