Vogue 1357. Top

Rachel Comey, me has fallado.

Rachel Comey: You let me down with this one.
I love all your patterns,  the LAST PROYECT was a complete success. And V 1170 is just too pretty, both design, contruction and details. Even the skirt I´m wearing for the photos is your very own V 1247, everyone´s favourite.

I never had to make any alterations, other than lengthen the skirts, and the size was almost spot on, taking in a seam or two. Until now

Enter V1357

Do you spot the difference between the drawing and the photo?
The straight neckline in the drawing turned a "semi" cowlneck in the photo.

We were warned by Faye of Faye´s Sewing Adventure. And I had to tackle the same problems.

This is the result:

La pose parecía más fácil
The pose looked easier than it is :)

La vista lateral no mejora
Side view doesn´t make it any better

La vista de atrás es la mejor
The back view is the best IMO

Just a cute little top to wear with this skirt.
Let´s make a review, and we can see the problems in detail.

Pattern Description: Fitted, pullover top has front extending to back with pleats forming shoulder straps, no shoulder seams, very narrow hem finish for straps and neckline and bias drawstring

Pattern Sizing: 4-20. I made my usual size 12

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? There are some parts that are not alike.  Looks like mine is  longer. And that front neckline!

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were fine. It is a very easy top to put toguether. After you make the pleats and the very thin hems, everything is quite simple. I didn´t like the topstitching on the front pleats. I don´t think it looks nice. I topstitched again on the end of the pleats at the straps.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the feminine look, almost 20s, airy and soft.
I don´t like the result so much.

Fabric Used: It is a kind of crushed crepe from my stash

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: There are two mayor defects on this pattern. The first one, the front neckline: There were 6 cm of "loose" neckline , hanging in there, not a cowl, not a scooped neck, just too much width. If I had to make this one again I´d remove 3 cm from the pattern before cutting the front on the fold. As mine was already cut, and sewn I had to gather the neckline pushing those gathers to the center. If you let the gather go too close to the pleats on the front-staps, it looks weird.
The other one is the armhole. I had to stitch up the side seams 4 cm, and still it is too low, I couldn´t go up any further, as the top was loosing the shape.
I sewed a bra strap holder on the front pleats, otherwise the top won´t stay in place

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I´d recommend it with modifications but I would not sew it again. There are too many cute looking tops out there!

Conclusion: I you want to make this,my advise is: measure. From one bra strap to the other, then the pattern, and make the neccesary adjustments. And mind the side seams if you don´t want to go showing your bra

Pues no sé.

4 cm and it still shows!

Sloppy, I know. I just wanted to show you the bra strap holder
Corto y cambio.

OK Rachel, I won´t hold this against you, because I like you, but get your act together or I´ll go back to Burda.:)

And you, dear readers, thank you for putting up with my drags. You are the best. Over and Out !

  1. Your top looks good on you despite the length of that datgum armhole. Your modifications, the gathered neckline, sewing up 4cm on the armhole and the bra straps were modifications that made the flaws of the pattern disappear. Mine is still lingering at the bottom of my sewing room trash basket for such a long time. I keep telling myself that I will work on it again to save the fabric that I thought would be perfect for this pattern and for a cute summer top. MMMMM, not sure if that is going to happen though.

    1. They didn´t disappear but at least I can take the thing to the beach or something. Next time I won´t buy the pattern until you review it! :D

  2. Once again, I nod my head in disappointment with Vogue patterns. You pay so much for them and then you have to reconstruct them because they are too slack to produce a good fitting pattern for home sewers. Luckily Merche you have such good sewing skills and you can fix the problems of a bad fitting pattern. But Vogue should be doing better and I very rarely will use a Vogue pattern. I know they have beautiful detail but what is the point of going to all that work and then the fit is terrible. I think this top is so pretty and I like the gathered detail on the front neck line. You have turned what could have been a disaster into a triumph!!!

  3. It's sad when a pattern does that to you, but I have to say that you still look fabulous in this top after your modifications!

  5. Good save. I'm short and often find the necklines on the Vogue designer patterns way too low without adjustment.

  8. The top looks so good on you. You've done a fabulous job with it.

Thanks for the great review. I will stay away from this one as I don't have the patience required!

I love your photo background, by the way.

Me gusta!!!

  13. Yikes! That was a bit of drama from what should be such a pretty top. I rather like the gathers you've added to save it though - it now looks pretty darn fabulous!

    ResponderEliminar
    Besos.

  15. interesting review. I thought that pattern looked a bit problematic and despite my love for all the Rachel Comey skirts the tops always seem a bit too droopy, as you found with this one. This skirt pattern looks a bit odd too, I can see why you wore the 1247 skirt. well your RC yellow dress was a complete success! thanks for the info. and your fix worked out well, now it is a pretty and wearable top.

    Besitos nena

  17. Good save, the finished top looks great. You know, I used to always find Vogue designer patterns reliable sizewise, but I'm working on a Tracey Reese dress now which is HUGE, so maybe Rachel Comey is not to blame, but instead something is going on at Vogue??

  21. It's a very pretty top, Merche, despite all it's failings. Your review is very thorough. I get frustrated, too, when a pattern isn't everything it looks to be.
