Burda 10/2012 #110 El Chaleco Manta. The Blanket Vest

¡Hola guapas!

Hello ladies!
I just made a present. But I had no intention to do so. I so wanted this vest for me, it´s cold right now, but I didn´t trust Burda Magazine and I have to pay for my mistake.

I thought that I had to wear this with turtel necks and a thermal and what not beneath so I made a size 40 instead of my usual 38. But Burda had thought it for me. To cut the long story short: When sewing with Burda I have to think "a la Spanish" No previsions!

I like the pattern though. It´s double-breasted, asymmetric, a side pannel that can be used for "sliming purposes" when made with a contrast (and darker) fabric, and pockets. The fabric is a kind of wool bouclé if such a thing exist.

At least the recipient of this present won´t be afraid of showing the finishes as everything has it´s cute bias binding. The magazine asked for lining it, but I didn´t wanted to, so I just had to make a little pattern for the armhole facings

Chaleco Burda 024

Besos
Los pantalones son Vogue 1066

I´m so sorry about the quality of the photos. My tripod is missing the most important part, and there seem to be no spare parts on sale. My official fotographer is on holiday so I asked one of my co-workers to take my pic...in a hurry...one minute before the doors opened and hoards of under 10s would take over the place and our attention.
I hope I can bring you something a bit more exciting next time. Actually I´m sure of it. What can be less exciting than a blanket-vest? :D
Oh, and the trousers are Vogue 1066

¡Ponte en el Mapa! Map the Sewintists

Hi! You probably know about this initiative by Another Sewing Scientist that consist on pining yourself on a google map to know what crafty people live around your area for meetups and stuff. Head over to her blog to know more about this, I´m translating for Spanish sewists. Hope to see your blue little pin!

¡Hola!
Besitos y Feliz Miercoles

Lencería ¡Por Fin! Lingerie at Last!

And on time for Valentine´s day! Bonus points!

ling 030

This is a story of stubborness and comradeship. It all began with the Bra-Making Sew Along hosted by Amy of Clothhabit. I told her this already: Forget all those girls from Victoria´s Secret. If there is a lingerie angel, that´s Amy! She has been so patient with me, helping me from the beggining and  to the extent of drafting a pattern just for me. How great is that!
There were a lot of trial and error, just have a look!

And all the muslins...and there are 2 missing, the first and the last.

When I knew about the sew-along I already had a bra- pattern at home. And I wanted to make it out of stuff I could find locally. I was not so sure about this working for me, so I didn´t want to invest too much money.

Kwik Sew 2101
Kwik Sew 2908

I bought some satin and lycra from the local store, and all the lingerie stuff in black I could find at the notions Store. There was lingerie elastic, lace, loops, closures. And they even had the elastic I used for the knickers that is so pretty, like the sexi sister of picot elastic?

What I´ve learnt here is that this is hard. Very hard! I´m not so good at sewing lycra and elastic, but I hope in the future I´ll get better. Along the way I also deconstructed several old bras which gave me a better idea of the whole thing. I´m so pleased with the outcome and so grateful to Amy.

Tarifa Pirates And Pattern Magic-Apple Peel

Once again is this time of year: Carnival. Where I live it´s really big and every year all the children at school wear a costume related to a theme. This year we got lucky and we are PIRATES, yay! ( Last year we were just Troglodytes, so we have improved)

A friend of mine lent me a pirate costume for my boy, but I had none for the girl and she didn´t want to be a princess pirate, meaning she didn´t want a skirt, and I thought it was a good chance to use the Pattern Magic Apple Peel B. You can see two great  adult versions at Fehr Trade where you can also see how this is constructed and at Carolyn.

Tarifa Pirates 129

For the blouse I used pattern 136 , BurdaStyle 05/2011 quite freely, and lots of lace. Some for the cuffs, some gathered for the front.

Tarifa Pirates 125

The vest was made out of the same pattern I used for the Simple Dress, cutting it at the front and making it longer.

The vest is made of poor-man´s  velvet but it has been adorned with some vintage trimmings and my dad´s buttons that originally belonged to his uniform back in the 60´s

The hat, also full of hand-sewn lace trimming, was first seen here

leggings julia 003

These are the leggins lying flat. What you do here is take a normal leggins pattern, slash it along the leg then fan it out to produce a snail-like pattern.

This is all from me this week. I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead and may your Valentines show you a lot of love!

Pattern Magic. Stretch Fabrics. Whac-A-Mole

¡Hola!
Ya he terminado algo.

Hello!
I finished something, at last! I took a break from lingerie (how hard is that? Gosh!) and I wanted to try something from this book. I asume everybody knows this one, that the author is Tomoko Nakamichi and that his desings are, well, different! I like them so much but I admit that you have to be quite brave to wear some of them.

I asked the Three Kings (The ones that bring the presents at Christmas time in Spain) to order this and the first book from Play.com in the link above, and as usual, with this company, I had no problems. They are  the best when it comes to books, free delivery and they have the best prices for used books, too.
But I digress. The first time I saw something made from this book was at Carolyn´s bog Aqui . You know she is my sewing Super-hero :o)
I can´t remember if this precise model is the one I first saw on her blog but her version of the Whac-A-Mole is Super!

Back to the book. It says that this is  dress with the head emerging in different places, like a Wack-a-mole game in which the head keeps popping out no matter how many times you bash it. The fun here is to see the silhouette change whenever you make the head or arms come out of a different hole.

The pattern starts with your basic top pattern adding a midi- turtle neck and drawing two more where the shoulders should be, adding a rectangular skirt with openings at hip level. Those will become your armholes for when you want to wear it differently. I made it with two meters of ponte knit.
This would be the "long version".

Now, going behind the bushes to change...be right back!

Pinar del Rey 057

Aqui llego.

And this is the "short version". There are two ways of wearing it short. One with the head out of the same hole and the other, the one I´m wearing, with the head through one of the sleeves. I like it better like this because the draping goes to one side.

A close-up and the back view. It looks great with jeans but I forgot to take them to the forest.

I finished the hip-holes with bias and then closed the side seams

I had some troubles with the sleeves: Ponte is not so stretchy lenght-wise, so my head was to big to go through. I chopped the lenght and added some bands but I didn´t make them meet and they are open under the arms so that it is less bulky and it looks good when my head is out of one of those.
I also finished the hems of the skirt with double needle.

I can tell that from all the stuff I´ve sewn lately this is the one that got all the attention...In a good way.
See you soon!
