Tejidos Mary Part II. Fabric binge.

¡Hola compis!

Hello! After all your good advise I went early this morning to the "expensive" fabric shop to look for a fabric with which make a short jacket for the upcoming wedding I´m attending. I´ll be wearing my bar counter dress. This fabric is "heavy" and has a very nice wrong side that sadly I´ll be covering with lining.

I think they match!

Mucho mejor!
Always following your advise, I bought some stretch satin for the lace I was showing you in the previous post. Much better!

Now, when I get out of the store, the owner was setting up a table with sale fabrics. 2 euros per meter.
When I saw this one I just got glued to it. Crepe georgette in a shade that is very trendy this season, don´t know the name for it. I don´t usually follow fashion, but sometimes I do just for not looking too weird. 3 meters of this. I can do most anything.

And after that the man showed me a cotton bambula. I instantly saw a dress for my girl with some nice lace I´ve been keeping for ages. 2 meters of this, please!

So that´s all for now! I wish you again  a Happy Easter!

Mi tienda de Telas y proyectos. My fabric shop and New Proyects

I had time to go to the flea market last Tuesday. I go straight to Ani´s place. Now the season for sewing "Flamenco" dresses has started so it´s overloaded with polka dots of every color and dimension.

My son on a chilly morning he came along.

Anyhow, I came back home with some nice pieces.
The first one is to make the pants that go with the Pleaty Pleats top . Risky, uh? I know but printed pants are very trendy right now...well maybe not THIS kind of print.

Later I saw this lace and had to be mine. I want to make a simple thing like this Patrones Easy Sewing n.3. (The dress, not the jacket) I never worked with lace before...Is there a technique so that the darts don´t  show too much on the outside? I also got blue lining fabric but I´m doubtful as the lace is elastic...we´ll see.

To make the most of it I took also a black cotton satin, and a matching lining. I´m attending a wedding in Sevilla in April and I´m planning on wearing the Bar Counter Dress. What about McCall´s 5525? It´s at 9 p.m. I´m open to suggestions about this particular.

Vogue 1039. Aka "Pleaty Pleats"

It´s finish! Gosh! I really had to work on this one! taylor tacks, pleats, gatherings, bastings...
Also this time I didn´t get away with cutting a size smaller than the one I should with Vogue. I usually do that as the patterns tend to be bigger than they should... not this time. I had to open a bit the side seams under the arms, but as it is not a fitted top, the rest was ok.

Back side is not right. I had an accident and burnt one of the sides, so I had to cut another, but as I had not enough fabric, I did it wide- wise instead of length-wise. Not a wise-wise desition. Guess wich one is the" baddy"

Sobre todo en la caida. Mirad que diferencia.
Yep! You guessed right! Look at the diference!

By the way... Did you notice my Wisteria? I´m so proud of it! It´s the first time it flowers, after three years at home. And they smell nicely!

Bonitas,¿ eh?  Pretty, uh?

¿Gato yo? Miau!

All right! That´s all for the week. I haven´t sleep much the past weekend as I was sewing. My husband says I´m a cat, always active at night. Me a cat? Meow!

Progresos (o no) en el top. Donna Karan top -In progress.

I´m trying to be as quick as I can to finish this top to enter made-by-rae´s spring top sewalong

Yesterday I cut the fabric. Satin, but it´s eslastic widewise. The pattern has got 10 pieces, some of them must be cut 4 times.

After that I started marking the fabric with taylor tacks. 2 gazillion of them.

Hoy otra panzada a hivanar pliegues y coserlos.
Today was fun day: basting and basting: pleats, seam allowances, you name it! The pleats in the front behaved themselves...

¡Pero los traseros! ¡Grrrr! A los tiburones!

But the back pleats?  Feed them to the sharks!

Doble ¡Grrrr!

And just when I think the worst part is done I go and burn the back side piece  with my iron not once, but two times! I had to cut two pieces, mark them twice... Double portion for the sharks!

Gente comprensiva, oye!

When you have no sewing room to speak of, it´s not unusual to end up sewing on a Winnie the Pooh table in the company of pirates, giraffes and the like...Sympathetic bunch.

A ver que pasa mañana.

Let´s see what tomorrow will bring ( more golden fabric??)

Sentirse mas guapa segun" Patrones". Feeling prettier by Patrones Magazine

Trying to make the most of the beach outing the other day, I took this other dress that I made last summer and never took a picture of.

It is Patrones 304  #1

El decorado es Gibraltar.
In the background :Gibraltar

Patrones magazine proposes this dress to make you feel prettier, but I had ulterior motivations: Not too much flowery poplin in my hands.
One pet peeve of mine when it comes to this magazine: Do you want me to sew this pattern? Show it to me then! Why is this lady lazing around when she should be standing? Artistic purposes, perhaps?

The dress has got yoke front and back. Pleated front, back top and skirt have got darts and the skirt front is slightly gathered. As the fabric was too see-through, I lined it fully with white poplin

back side.

I add the ribbon on the waist in a attempt to make it look less plain

Most of the times it unties itself

And then its purpose is running in the water in an artistic way.

A close up of the not so neat pleats

Y el interior.
The inside

By the way, What´s your take on flower prints?
Hasta pronto!
See you soon!

Vogue 8489

There are days when a northerner like myself stop missing her hometown. Up north is really pretty but there is no way you can go to the beach and BATHE in the middle of March. That´s what me and my family did last weekend and as we were there and the photogrpher was inspired, I took the chance to show you this dress.

First of all. What´s the name of the colour? I don´t even know it in Spanish!

The fabric is a very light knit, and the contrast, well, I couldn´t find in the store something that matched so I took this quite sturdy and rigid thing that did, and that´s what caused all the problems because the bands were short (lack of stretch I think) I removed the zipper too. It looked weird, but I can put it on if I squeeze my ribcage a little.
The back side of the skirt is longer than the front. But I kind of like it that way.

¡Ya está aquí la primavera!
Hooray for Spring!

Como Forrar un Vestido sin Mangas. How to Line a Sleeveless Dress

More technical doubts. Last year when I was making this dress, I spent a long time reading and trying to make sense of the lining instructions. I just couldn´t visualize the "how to". In the end I did it the best I could but cheating a lot. If you are new to lining and you are in the same situation I was then, this post is for you. I´m going to follow Burda´s lining instructions step by step.

First thing, prepare the fabric and lining. Here, I´m using some strips of interfacing cut on the bias to give stability to the neck and armholes

Negra. No tenia otra.

Burda tells you to put the facings with the front and back pieces and sew along the neckline and arm holes always finishing 0.8 inches shy of the shoulder sewing line

Mark the 0.8 inches to make sure you stop there

Right sides together pin the front bodice and front lining and stitch. Same thing with the back/s and back lining.

Now trim seam allowances and make some cuts, specially in the round areas, very near the stitch.

Turn the front bodice right sides out and iron it (by Burda you don´t iron at this point)

Now we place the front  shoulder openings inside the back openings and align the linings and the main fabric.

6- Ahora cosemos POR SEPARADO, forros y tela principal.
We stitch now linings and main frabric separately.

To iron seams open, pull the front bodice through the back bodice, place a wooden spoon handle. I´d trim these seam allowances too.

We pull the front further through the shoulder hole , to close those 1.6 inches we left open at the begining.

We turn the back bodice parts to the outside and iron the whole thing

Now we are closing the sides. Lift outside fabrics on both sides and align these and the linings too, sewing them in one continuos seam.

Iron the seams open, take the outside fabric down and your bodice is ready to attach the skirt, the zipper or whatever it is that you want to do now.

See you soon!
