Vestida de Primavera. Dressed in Spring

¡Hola costureras!

Hello fellow sewists! Look at the fabric I found a couple of months ago, while I was buying something so boring I can't even remember what it was...What I do  remember is that it was cold back then, and that I had a yearning for anything that screamed spring.

It is an elastic fabric, but it looks like piqué. The problem was that, the way I envisioned the dress, because it HAD to be a dress, I had to use the fabric width-wise, not lenght-wise, and the elasticity was across, so it now goes along the dress... Am I making any sense?

The fabric asked for a very simple pattern, besides I left the shop with only one meter of it. I took out my sloper, the one I made for this CRAFTSY CLASS, and I had to make some adjustments to it, as it seems I have change sizes.

I measured on the back where my bra closure lays, so it didn't show when wearing the dress, and the rest went very nicely.
It was quite tricky to sew those darts, given that the elasticity was along the dress, but I think it doesn't show much.
Also I tried to finish the raw edges with a bias strip, then folding and sewing on top (edge stitching) but it didn't turn out well. Instead I blind-stitch the bias. It looks neater

Mobility was also an issue with this dress, as I tend to walk with very long strides, so I left a slit on the right side. It is much more comfortable now, and yes, rather sexy too!

¡Nos vemos pronto!

See you soon!

Java Wax Goes a Long Way

She was a lovely young thing, all dark hair and huge eyes, slender and supple as a willow wand , yet conveying an air of toughness as well.
Robin Hobb THE GOLDEN FOOL: BOOK TWO OF THE TAWNY MAN (2002)

My little princess (some other times she is my little surfer girl, but not today) is growing up slender, long-limbed and with strong square shoulders.
She couldn´t be prettier, but it seems that no pattern magazine for kids contemplate her frame.
So when she got an invitation for a First Communion Party, I knew I would be needing to take out my pattern-making notes and draft one based on her measures.

Hice un vestido simple y efectivo usando ESTA/THIS tela.

I´ve made a very simple and effective dress using ESTA/THIS fabric. I still have a meter and a half left!
Basic lined bodice and a pleated skirt ( you know how much I hate gathering!) I wanted to use buttons in the back instead of a zipper this time.
I also wanted to add a sash, but that's where she drew the line.

The lining method is ESTE/THIS ONE. This tutorial takes you step by step on how to line a sleeve-less dress.

I was going to line the skirt too, but I followed my mother´s advise and I made a slip with an elastic waist so I don't have to wash all that fabric each time. I've had that lace ending for ages and I finally took the chance to use it.

¡Felicidades Natalia!
¡Nos vemos pronto!

So with this little dress, new ballerina shoes and a short jacket, she had a great time at Natalia's party.
See you soon!

Negroni in Java Wax

Me apunto!!

Ever since I went to Paris I have fallen in love... with African Wax.
I first went to PLACE SAINT PIERRE, lots of fabric shops there, but nothing too far removed from what you can find at home.
However, on my way to that place, I found several shops that really caught my eye; how wouldn´t they? All those meters of vibrant colours waiting to be  transformed into something pretty!
That neighbourhood of Paris is called LA GOUTTE D'OR and has large numbers of North-Africans and sub-Saharian residents and it is known for its open-air market.
The shops sell fabrics but not by the meter, you have to buy all six yards of it; a concept totally new to me, but quite understandable if you have a look around and see how the ladies in the neighbourhood are using theirs.
I have two of them, and I´ve already used both. This is the first thing I show you, but not the first I make, but being so summery I'll wait for better weather.

If you want to find out more about African prints there is ESTE/THIS POST where they tell you how they are made and the different kinds there are.
This particular one is called Java Wax. I was looking for a unisex print, and not too loud. You see: this shirt is not for me, it is a present for someone who is not very used to colours.

So I transformed part of the yardage into a COLETTE'S NEGRONI . I love making this shirt. The instructions are so very good that it is a real pleasure to sew it up from the first to the last stitch.
I'm getting better at flat-felled seams...

And mastering top-stitching too! Sadly, you can't appreciate it fully from the photos, but you can take my word for it!

Just looooved making those cuffs! Shirt making is quite technical, if you know what I mean. But utterly rewarding.

And I also take the chance  to show you my new bag for the Spring/Summer season: LE SAC BY CHARO MURCIANO. A roomy, yet easy to wear bag perfect for carrying all my stuff. I had a winter version that got really worn and I found it so useful that I HAD to make this one. The good part is that I had all the materials at home!

¡FELICES COSTURAS PRIMAVERALES!

And that's all from me. As usual I apologize for my lack of presence in my blog and also in yours. I do open my bloglovin feed from time to time but dayly matters take up most of it.
I'm also sorry about not being able to participate this year in ZOE'S ME-MADE-MAY. I´ve been there three years in a row and it breaks my heart not doing it again, but free time has become a commodity.
I´ll see you soon, hopefully, but in the meantime:
ENJOY YOUR SEWING!!
