Vacaciones y Sorpresas Burda. Holiday and Burda (Spain) Surprise

¡No ha pasado ni una semana y ya os echaba de menos!

Ya hemos llegado a Santander y con buen tiempo (increible). He tenido problemas con internet...o falta del mismo. Pero mi amiga Ana que es un sol y tiene soluciones para todo hoy mismo tomando una tapita me ha dicho: "Ah, usa este pincho" y ya estoy conectada.! Gracias!

Not a week went by and I was missing this already!

I´m spending the summer months in my hometown, Santander and the weather so far has been fantastic. I had problems with the internet conection, or the lack of it, but it was timely solved by my friend Ana who gave me one of those things you plug to your computer... Don´t know the name of it. I´m connected , hurray!

Estaba deseando ponerme en contacto con todas vosotras por que al final piqué con el Burda 07-2012, y por lo visto se han modernizado y tienen Facebook y todo.

Pero despues, hojeando la revista veo esto:

This is what I´ve found inside the Burda Magazine this month. Apparently they have Facebook now and they want to send them photos of our creations from where to choose some and feature them in their facebook page as well as in the magazine. Is this happening in other countries too?

Se lee bastante bien, ¿no?. Hasta el 20 de Julio, mandar una foto con el modelito, en la calle, de dia y de cuerpo entero indicando numero revista y patrón a burdaespana@tailormade.pt. Se seleccionaran varios modelos para el Facebook y uno de ellos saldrá en la revista...¿Que os parece? ¿Nos animamos?

Por otro lado sigo con alguna cosita aunque muuuy despacio. Estoy ahora con esta falda Vogue 1247, que va con el top bautizado como La Refinitiva, y me gusta mucho por que es una falda sencilla pero con acabados Hong-Kong y la parte de los bolsillos es muy original. Cuando esté terminada prometo reportaje por Santander, más por enseñaros la tierruca, que la falda.

I´m working really slow with Vogue 1247 skirt. I like it so much. Love the hong-kong finish and the pockets. When it´s finish I´ll try to take some photos in the nicest places here in Santander

Primera vista: Playa de los Tranquilos, al otro lado de la bahia se ve el palacio de la Magdalena y la ciudad de Santander.

 A sneak peak of the area. This is Los Traquilos beach (Tranquilo means quiet, but this is a surfing spot, so it´s not really quiet). At the other side of the bay you can see the city of Santander and the Magdalena Palace.

Locura Dominical. Sunday Craziness

Tarde de domingo, nada que coser, porque lo tengo todo empaquetado para irme al norte a pasar el verano con la familia.

 Miro el correo: Vogue esta de cuatro días de oferta, y se acaban mañana. Voy a echar un vistazo.

Tenia un par de modelos fichados, como este vestido que lleva ballenas y eso nunca lo he probado a hacer

Sunday afternoon, nothing to sew, because all my sewing stuff is packed to go up north to spend the summer with the family.

I have a look at the mail and Vogue is on a 4-day-sale, that finishes tomorrow. I go to my wish list. I had a couple of models there like this dress with boning. I´ve never tried that technique before.

Tambien esta chaqueta tipo Chanel. Ya sé que me habia comprado el Patrones por la chaqueta, pero dada la claridad de la revista en sus instrucciones y que yo nunca he Chaneleado nada, pues mejor esta, ¿no?

Also this Chanel style jacket. I know I bought Patrones magazine for the same reason, but the instructions are terrible and I´ve never "Chaneled" anything, well I rather make this one

Después se me metió en la cabeza hacer este modelo para mi suegri, en plan sorpresa...aunque algo se olerá cuando le tome las medidas. No sé si estoy preparada para coser "bien" para otros cuerpos pero hay que intentarlo alguna vez. (Mamá cuando vuelvas te toca a tí, pero algo facilito ¿eh?)

What about this one? I want to make it for my mother-in-law as a surprise. I don´t know if I´m ready to sew for "other bodies" but just because she is such a darling I´ll make the effort.

 En cuanto ví este modelo me acordé de  los vestidos que hacia su hermana a mi madre cuando era jovencita, igual no tiene nada que ver, pero ha sido verlo y  "pa la zaca". He estado investigando y por lo visto es uno de esos modelos que parecen fáciles y luego no. Pero tiene muchas posibilidades ¿no?
When I saw this model I remembered the dresses my mother tells me that she wore in her youth. It was love at first sight! I´ve been researching and this is one of those that look easy, then they are not.

De Camarera a Agricultora. From Waitress to Farmer

¿Os acordais del modelo de camarera? La falda la he puesto varias veces pero la camisa no, por que no sienta en el cuello. A las pruebas me remito. Ni abriendo los botones, ni tirando de aqui y allá, nada, sobra tela.

Do you remember my waitress outfit? I´ve worn the skirt a couple of times but not the shirt. The neck is just not right. Just look at the photo. I tried wearing it open, tugging here and there. There is just too much fabric in that area.

Y en realidad yo queria el modelo de la siesa.

Besides, what I really wanted at the very beginning was the girl´s shirt

Con todo el dolor de mi corazón le quité el cuello, con lo bien que me habian quedado los picos!

Y le modifiqué la linea de los hombros, también le he recortado el cuello por detras.

It broke my heart to remove my perfectly pointy neckband, I modified the shoulder line and cut some fabric from the back of the neck.

 

Y le hice un cuello extendido. No ha habido forma de encontrar una hebilla para forrar. Al menos en las mercerias donde compro.

I made a new and extended neckband, but I couldn´t find any buckles for it at my notions store.

Claramente ahora no la puedo cerrar hasta arriba, pero los cuellos cerrados me agobian un poco en verano. Con los shorts vaqueros queda mona. Y mi marido se ha fijado en la camisa sin necesidad de agobiarle con el "Mira,mira lo que he hecho, ¿te gusta?"

Clearly I cannot close it completely now but, well, it´s almost summer! It looks cute with shorts, AND my husband noticed it without me going "look, look what I made, do you like it?"

¡Y que tomates tengo, oiga! Si parecen de Conil!

Summer Spark Sew-Along. Donna Karan Top- Falda Burda Skirt

Antes de nada, daros a todas las gracias por vuestros consejos acerca de como poner la cremallera. Siento no haber respondido, estaba liada cosiendo y descosiendo y ademas he tenido fiesta de fin de curso, pero gracias, es fantástico poder compartir con vosotras, expertas costureras, información e inspiración a partes iguales.

I have to thank you, first of all for all your tips about the "wavy" zipper. I couldn´t answer in the previous post as I was so into mending the thing. It´s great to be able to share information and inspiration!

Vamos al lío entonces: Empezamos por el top Donna Karan, Vogue 1282 Es un patrón de una sola pieza al bies, que se cierra por la espalda y los hombros, dificultad, ninguna. Lleva dos tiras de la misma tela, jersey finito, para pulir las sisas, y para que el drapeado se quede en su sitio, se hace un "bolsillo" y se mete un plomo...yo una moneda de 10 cts.

Let´s cut to the chase then. Starting with Top Donna Karan,Vogue 1282 This is a one-piece pattern, on the bias, that  closes in the back and shoulders, easy! It has two strips of the same fabric to finish the armholes and something I´ve never made before, a little pocket in the front so that the drape stays in place. I used a coin. The drape doesn´t stay in place though.

La unica modificación que he hecho ha sido bajar el cuello por la parte de atrás por que se me subía al cogote, y tambien cerrar más el escote delante, para que no se viera más de la cuenta

Vamos con la falda. Desde que la ví en el Burda de Mayo 2012, modelo 113, me encantó, pero no tenía claro si me iba a quedar bien, luego ví la versión de Dawn de Two on Two off y con esta tela supuestamente elástica (poco) me metí de cabeza.¿ Facil? ¡No! Con todos esos pliegues, se complica y si encima no le haces caso al Burda y lo haces con una tela que no es, pues peor. Ayer por la noche ya lo dejé por imposible y le hice el bajo de aquella manera, vuelta y vuelta y dos pespuntes. A dormir.

The skirt. I loved this one when I saw it in Burda May 2012 issue, model 113, I liked  Dawn of Two on Two off ´s version and with this fabric in my hands I took the plunge. Easy? Nope! what with all those pleats, and it gets worst if you don´t follow Burda´s indications to sew it in a fabric that is not as stretchy. Yesterday night I caved in, and just made the hem like fold-fold- double stitch - go to bed.

 Parte de atras de la falda, el pliegue se sube hasta la cinturilla, y lo he tenido que dejar así por que esta tela salvaje no se dejaba domesticar

Back side of the skirt. One of the pleat wants to climb up, and I just let it , because this wild fabric is untameable!

 Parte delantera, aunque da igual como te la pongas. La cremallera sigue haciendo olas, pero no tanto como al principio

 Vista de la cinturilla (tengo que quitar hilos) el interior me ha quedado para llorar, pero ya estaba un poco jarta de tó

The waist band (I have to remove bastings there) The inside is a terrible job, but I was so fed up with  this skirt I just left it like this. Next time I´ll do a better job.

Los pliegues, casar no casan perfectos pero me doy con un canto en los dientes despues de tanto descoser.

Resumiendo: Si te vas a hacer esta falda que la tela sea de verdad elástica, que se doblegue ante tu plancha y sobre todo marca los pliegues minuciosamente. Ah! y si tienes que poner cremallera ¡no te olvides de la entretela!

In short: If you are thinking about making this skirt, get yourself a nice real knit, that bows to your iron. Tack all the pleats carefully... And if you want to use the zipper, don´t forget to interface!

Después de la "pechá" del Me-Made-May algo tranquilito. El Summer Spark Sew Along De todas formas ya tenia pensado hacerme algun top más y otra falda. Este año no hay vestidos para mí, con lo que me gustan!
After the Me-Made-May, something more relaxed: The Summer Spark Sew Along. I had in mind sewing up another top and skirt. No dresses for me this year.

La tela tiene algo de elasticidad, pero no suficiente para que pasen mis caderas por el el agujero de la cintura, que además es bastante alta, así que me estoy peleando para ponerle una cremallera. Al ser la tela tan fina, la cremallera hace olas. No se como puedo arreglar eso...¿alguna idea?

All the tacks for the pleats.

The fabric has some elasticity but no enough not to put a zipper, but as the fabric is so thin, the zipper is looking "wavy" Any suggestions as how to solve that problem???

La moda plus está bastante mejor que la regular y en el departamento niños, esta vez toca bebés con estilo marinero cuyos modelos son una monada.

Como poner Bies con Cordón para principiantes. How to insert piping for beginners

Seguro que hay un montón de sitios donde puedes encontrar información sobre como poner el bies con cordón, pero el año pasado, cuando puse yo el primero, no encontré nada y me tuve que conformar con las instrucciones de Espejito Espejito:" Cose insertando el bies en la costura" ¡Maravilloso! Así que tuve que descoser más de una vez para que quedase bien.

Surely there are many places where you can find information about how to insert piping, but last year when I had to do it for the first time, I couldn´t find any, and I had to make do with the instructions in the magazine: "stitch both pieces inserting the piping". Great! So I had to rip the seams too many times to get it right

AVISO: esto es para PRINCIPIANTES, y es mi modo de hacerlo. Igual lo hace así todo el mundo, o lo estoy haciendo mal, pero a mi me funciona. POR FAVOR, si tienes otro método mejor, o sin tanto hilván, hazmelo saber.

Warning: This is for beginners, and my way to do it. Maybe everybody uses the same technique, or I´m doing it wrong, but it works for me. PLEASE, if you have a better way, or if yours doesn´t need so much basting, let me know.

El bies con cordón se puede hacer, pero yo prefiero comprarlo hecho de la mercería, que no sale nada caro y te quitas de problemas.

You can make your own piping, but I prefer the no-fuss version that you purchase in a notions store.

Esto lo he hecho con el modelo 145 Burda 05/2012, que pide que la parte de abajo de la parte delantera se frunza. Yo le voy a hacer unos pliegues.

I made this with model 145 from Burda 05/2012. In the front (not in the yoke) you have to gather the fabric, but I´m going to pleat that part instead.

1- En el DERECHO de la tela, a la cual ya habrás marcado el margen de costura, coloca el bies de modo que el cordón sobresalga del margen solo la anchura del cordón, y fíjalo con alfileres
1- On the right side of the fabric, mark the seam allowance. Put the bias so that the cord protrudes, and pin it

2-Pasa un hilván
2- Baste it

3-A la pieza que vas a unir, despues de marcarla, pasa los hilos para fruncir, pero aún no lo frunzas. Si le vas a hacer pliegues marcaselos. En mi caso es facil con las rayas. Vete uniendo drecho con derecho dejando el cordón fuera, pero prendiendo el bies y poniendo alfileres por ambos lados hasta que llegues a las marcas de fruncir

3-If you are going to gather the other piece, baste it but don´t gather yet. If you are going to pleat it, mark it. Start pinning from the sides until you get to the gathering marks. You are doing this with right sides together and leaving the cord out of it, just the bias

4-Ahora frunce la tela o hazle los pliegues y prendelo
4- Now it´s the time for gathering or pleating, adjust the length and finish you pinning

5-Pasamos otro hilván intentando llegar lo mas cerca del cordón sin prenderlo

5- We baste againg the whole thing, basting as close to the cord as you can

Ahí lo tienes: Bocadillo de bies.

There you go: a bias sandwich

6-Ahora, con el pie de coser las cremalleras, coloca las telas de modo que el cordón quede bien cerquita de la puntada, con el dedo guíalas para que el cordón siempre esté a esa altura. Si tu máquina tiene un botón para mover la aguja hacia los lados, usalo. (Con puntada recta, en mi máquina se mueve si le das al ancho de puntada zig zag un par de veces)

6-Now, with the zipper foot, the pieces in a way that the cord is really close to you stitch, and use your finger to guide the fabric. With some sewing machines you can move the needle slightly to the sides, you can use it to be more accurate in your stitching 

¡Y ya tienes un vivo estupendo!

And voilá!
